Sister Joan Evans was 60 years old when she moved from Perth, in Western Australia, to Bangkok’s largest slum to serve the poor in 1991. She worked tirelessly, often seven days a week, for months on end, over  next 25 years. She showed us the power of compassion and care, particularly for young mothers and elderly people in need of support. She inspired volunteers who kept coming, many of them for years. You can read more about Sister Joan here .

This website is dedicated to her Mission that is still going, 35 years on. Sister Joan started the Milk Run in 1992 in response to high mortality among newborns and babies at that time. After publicity about Sister Joan’s work, more donors were drawn to support her work. That enabled her to fund the Rice Run, which was organized as a group effort in 2002, after years of supporting different households and seeing that elderly residents the Klong Toei slum also needed help to get basic food items.

In 2016, when Sister Joan was in her mid-80s, close supporters in Bangkok suggested that, with age having taken a toll on her health and undermining her capacity to speak Thai, she should return to Perth after a quarter of a century of devotion to her neighbors in the Rong Moo slum. But the Presentation Sisters were happy to keep funding her mission. And in 2019, we added a new program called the School Run to support education, which is a key focus of the order, to keep helping registered students undertake further study and complete a degree at universities in Thailand.
